Don't forget the accessories when creating your own grow light system. When dealing with fluorescent lights, they run cooler than traditional lights but can still get very hot. You can deal with this heat and protect your plants by placing a cooling fan in or around the canopy. The added benefit of this is the increase in bulb light due to the decrease in heat which can save you significant amounts of money in the long run for a very small upfront investment.
